Caramelized Onions Boost Flavor, Not Calories

by Eve on March 8, 2012

Are you looking for a way to inject mad flavor into your food, without adding calories or increasing the size of your jeans? I have the perfect solution for you: caramelized onions.

Caramelized Onions

Adding caramelized onions to everything from plain white rice to mac and cheese,Β or even a warm salad will make it pop with flavor, but not add tons of useless calories.

I always find that it’s best to make a large batch of caramelized onions on a Sunday afternoon so that I have plenty to add to dishes during the workweek. If you don’t know how, check out my previous post on How to Caramelize Onions.

Foods That Pair Perfectly with Caramelized Onions

  • Rice, whatever kind you like
  • Pasta dishes, pretty much any
  • Veggies, everything from artichokes to zucchini
  • Casseroles
  • Mac and Cheese
  • Over the top of Pot Roast
  • Mashed Potatoes
  • Salad, both warm and cold
  • Gravies and sauces
  • Omelettes or scrambled eggs
  • Grilled Cheese or hot paninis

The possibilities are really endless! If you’ve tried adding caramelized onions to your dishes, what’s your favorite pairing and why?

I agree, caramelized onions add great flavor to a lot of different stuff….. They are great in your rice.

I love onions in so many dishes and to add to that garlic! The two of those together along with cracked pepper are things that I rarely leave out of my dishes!

Caramelized onions are one of my favorite items! I love them on 2 things you mentioned above – salads & omelettes. I love an omelette with caramelized onions, sun dried tomatoes & goat cheese. Now I’m hungry. πŸ˜‰
